Working with Messy Data

Community Notes

We've all seen it: a document that should be a spreadsheet; a long, poorly-formatted text file; a spreadsheet that seems beyond repair. In this make/hack/play session we'll share tools and strategies for working with messy data. Come prepared to share your tools or techniques, or just bring a messy problem you've been trying to solve.

Quick talks:
  • Heather Wilson, Ferrum College: cleaning up and consolidating statistical e-resource data with web tools
  • Greg Schmidt, Auburn University: wrangling messy metadata for a digital newspaper collection
  • Teresa Slobuski, SJSU: Excel protips and hacking tabular data from Gimlet
  • Christina Harlow, UT-Knoxville: OpenRefine basics
  • Erin White, VCU: regular expressions for n00bs
  • Wildcard! Messy data therapy session/Q&A/BYO data problem or follow up with speakers for more info
