Creating a Just Community
Creating a Just Community

Community Notes

Even without the upheaval of events like those in Ferguson, Missouri, librarians can use our libraries to create just communities. This session's takeaways are two-fold: 1. Ideas, ideas, and more ideas for all types of libraries invested in social justice, and 2. Actual plans to implement some of those ideas.

This session will use padlet.com as a platform for recording ideas. You do not need any electronic devices during the session, though they are welcome. If you plan to bring a laptop or tablet and want to explore the platform in advance, there is a test wall for playing around with here.

Outreach Begins at Home: Librarians in the Archive
Outreach Begins at Home: Librarians in the Archive

Community Notes

What do technical services, collection development, digital library, instructional or reference librarians know about resources in special collections? How can we have conversations to share our passion for unique and rare materials and to explore how our collections and our methodologies can be of use to them and our joint patrons and donors?

We will develop pitches in breakout groups and discuss them as a whole; then break out again to discuss strategies around participant-supplied case studies for reaching colleagues (librarians) who may be terrified/bored/stumped by the idea of special collections; and wrap up with a larger group discussion of our findings.

Instructional Technologist or Librarian?
Instructional Technologist or Librarian?

Community Notes

As more and more institutions hire Instructional Technology Librarians, there are different descriptions, roles, and duties that these librarians fill. For a long time, instructional technology resided within an Information Technology Services department, or even through a Faculty Development program. But how does the role of instructional technologist and librarian overlap? How have librarians adopted the role of instructional technologist (making them instructional technology librarians), and how will this evolve as more and more librarians, faculty, students, and staff incorporate technology into their teaching and learning? This session will explore these questions and look to discuss some of the challenges associated with walking the line between technologist and librarian.

DMPs 'r' Us: Helping Humanists & Scientists Make Plans for Their Data

Community Notes

We keep hearing about the importance of data and how well-positioned librarians are to help manage it. If you've wondered how to get involved or want to exchange ideas, come to this session. A science and humanities librarian will get the ball rolling by sharing their experiences working with faculty on grant proposals--where that ball goes is up to you!
